For Personal Assistants & Personal Assistance Companies

Students who attend Adaptive Yoga classes often have a personal assistant with them. Personal assistants are a valuable resource in this context, and many are already skilled and experienced at helping their clients stretch spastic muscles. Hence, personal assistants have a head start for learning how to facilitate a yoga practice. But the normal routine of assisted stretching at home differs from assisted yoga stretching on a couple of important points.

First, assisted yoga stretches are always combined with breath instruction. Not only does this automatically enhance and exploit the relaxation reflex inherent in every breath, it also transforms the client from a passive receiver into an active participant. This is empowering.

Second, yoga stretches include poses that counter the effects of negative postural habits which accumulate from sitting in a wheelchair. It may not be possible for the Adaptive Yoga student to get down on the floor at the studio. But personal assistants can help their client build up comfortable, supported postures at home. In addition to encouraging good posture, these yoga poses can provide incredible relief – during the time they are being performed but also afterwards. Regular practice at home will grow the positive effects. Personal assistants can play a key role.

There is another potential, positive effect of personal assistants learning basic yoga principles. In the workshop Adaptive Yoga for Mobility Disability, participants are given the opportunity to test techniques themselves. We believe that if personal assistants experience first-hand how wonderful a pose can feel, it will motivate them to help their clients get the same feeling. Protecting their own body while applying stretches is constantly emphasized. Personal assistants may also discover one or two exercises that are extremely helpful for their own mind-body health. In this age where companies are struggling to reduce the cost of sick leave, yoga can play a powerful role. This is a WIN-WIN-WIN for the client, their personal assistants, and the company they work for.

Personal assistants are welcome to attend the following workshops:

Adapting Yoga for a Chair Practice (1 day)
Adaptive Yoga for Mobility Disability (2 days)
